Ryman the stationer has become a household name over the last 100 years. Recognised for quality products, value, reliability and service, it is the only specialist commercial stationery retailer operating in the High Street.
Founded in 1893 by Henry J Ryman, the first store opened on Great Portland Street, London and the flagship store still stands there today. Combining local convenience, helpful staff and specialist product knowledge, Ryman was the first ever self service stationery shop.
Targeting the small office and home office market, there are currently 92 shops in operation, all selling a range of over 200 commercial stationery products. As well as stocking paper, writing equipment, storage solutions and high tech items such as faxes and printers, some stores also sell office furniture. Ryman was also the first stationery retailer to trade mobile phones.
The store chain was aquired in 1995 by Chancerealm Ltd, controlled by Theo Paphitis after its parent
company at the time Pentos plc suffered financial collapse and Ryman entered into receivership. Since then
the business has continued to grow. In 1996 the direct mail-order catalogue was launched and in 1998 Ryman
entered the e-commerce market with a new online division.
