Theo heads to Solent to visit the School of Media, Arts and Technology

On Thursday 8th November new Chancellor Theo headed to Solent University to spend the day with the School of Media, Arts and Technology (SMAT). The school is the largest at the University with over 2,400 students across a wide range of disciplines from Film and Media Production to Acoustic Technologies and was a fascinating insight into the work in front of the camera, and behind the scenes.

Theo met with Paul Marchmark, the Dean of SMAT for a tour which included the Media Academy and Music Studios. As part of the tour Theo conducted an interview for Solent TV with the students studying film and television. It covered the story of Theo’s life and reflecting on key moments as well as a few light-hearted questions, with Theo asking them questions too!

Theo was also treated to a performance from the Musical Theatre and Acting and Performance students who did a modern take on The Hound of the Baskervilles which included music they had written themselves!

A working lunch saw Theo chat to students from across the 23 courses the school offers, learning about their backgrounds and how they ended up attending Solent University. A fascinating insight into the diversity of students at Solent.

In the afternoon two bands performed for Theo, BASH! and Bratis, in the specially designed studio, kitted out with incredible top of the range equipment for the students to learn from. Every year, a band from the Popular Music Performance degree heads to Abbey Road Studios to perform one of their tracks, an incredible opportunity to help accelerate them onto the world stage.

The day showcased the breadth of subjects and creativity that Solent offers.
