Theo Paphitis Inspires Future Entrepreneurs at University of Derby

Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Theo Paphitis has been inspiring the next generation of business leaders through a new initiative at the University of Derby.

Theo, alongside William Cavendish, Earl of Burlington, led the inaugural boardroom session of the University’s Entrepreneurs’ Club - a new programme designed to develop future entrepreneurial talent and equip students with real-world business skills.

Open to students from all disciplines, the Club aims to create a pipeline of ambitious entrepreneurs by offering direct access to leading figures from across industry. Its board includes senior leaders from organisations such as McDonald’s UK & Ireland, Google, Rolls-Royce and the Institution of Civil Engineers, bringing a wealth of experience into the classroom.

Theo Paphitis said:
“Higher education must evolve. It’s not just about qualifications - it's learning how to solve problems, take risks and think independently - and those are the skills that define success in the real world. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to work with the University of Derby. It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and criticise higher education or young people, but real change comes from investing directly in the next generation. Entrepreneurship is more than starting a business. It’s resilience, creativity and the confidence to challenge convention - whether you’re launching a company, designing a new technology or training to become a nurse. That’s why initiatives like this Entrepreneurs’ Club matter. I have been hugely impressed by the University's industry-focused approach and the ambition of the students I met in Derby. What they need now is access to networks, experience and people who will push them to think bigger.”

The session gave students the opportunity to pitch business ideas, take part in live discussions and receive direct feedback from experienced entrepreneurs. Selected participants will go on to receive mentoring from Theo Paphitis or work more closely with Lord Burlington over the coming year.

Students described the experience as both inspiring and invaluable. One attendee said:

“It was a real highlight not only to meet Theo Paphitis, but to have the chance to speak to him one-to-one and receive direct advice.”

Scarlett Flint, founder of pottery business Flint & Gaia, added:
“Theo took great interest in my work, and shared a few business tips with me. We hope to welcome him back to Banks Mill again in the future.”

The Entrepreneurs’ Club has been created to connect students and graduates with industry leaders, helping them build the mindset, skills and networks needed to succeed in business. The University of Derby received an overwhelming number of applications for the programme and plans to run it annually.

Professor Kathryn Mitchell CBE DL, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, said the initiative represents a significant opportunity:
“This is a life-changing opportunity for our students. Derby is a leading institution for industry engagement, widening participation and social mobility. This club will make a real difference for students and for the future economic growth of the UK.”
